Service Hours
Do you have cabin fever? Volunteering is a great way to fight the winter blues and help others at the same time! Some ideas from this year range from serving in the kids ministry at church to making blankets for the homeless to training therapy dogs for nursing home ministry. Below is some more information to help you encourage students complete the yearly requirement.
When is the due date? 16 volunteer hours are due May 9, 2025.
Where do students log their hours? Volunteer hours can be logged in the “Helper Helper” assignment in the Canvas “Bible Service” class.
Do summer hours count? Yes. Anything after May 24, 2024 counts for the 2024-2025 school year.
Who should they list as the “coordinator” when they enter their hours? A parent or guardian must click “accept” when they receive the email or text to approve hours.
What type of verification works best (cell or email)? Discuss this with your student. (A parent’s cell number is the quickest option.)
What if someone serves more than 16 hours? Students should log extra hours in their Helper Helper service portfolio, which they can print when applying for jobs or college.
How are service hours graded? In the Canvas grade book, verified hours are listed in the “Helper Helper” assignment. A student’s report card and transcript will note “satisfactory” (16+ hours) or “unsatisfactory” (less than 16 hours). (Hours do not affect GPA.)
Where can students find ideas and more info? Students can look in the “Information” section of their Bible Service class in Canvas and the “Ongoing Opportunities” tab of the Helper Helper assignment in Canvas.
