ACT and Pre-ACT Testing at CVCA – March 12
Tuesday, March 12, is the ACT and PreACT testing day for 9th, 10th, and 11th graders at CVCA. These students should report at the regular start time for school (7:50 a.m.) and follow the posted directions to proceed to their assigned testing rooms.
Middle school students and seniors do not have school on March 12.
The ACT is a nationwide standardized assessment to indicate students’ readiness in multiple domains – particularly math, science, and reading. CVCA requires each graduating senior to take the ACT at least once.
- Testers should arrive with sharpened #2 pencils (non-mechanical) and regular graphing calculators.
- Students will be dismissed at 11:50 a.m. The Learning Commons parking lot will be the best place to pick up students. Families are asked to make arrangements for early student pick-up.
Broad national research and CVCA’s internal data demonstrate that practicing the ACT multiple times can boost scores. This is important since many colleges attach significant scholarship dollars to strong ACT scores, and the odds of acceptance at selective universities rise significantly with good ACT performance. CVCA students are encouraged to do their best and to use good test-taking strategies. To get the most out of this testing experience, students should:
- SLEEP! The brain thinks best after a full night’s sleep. Aim for at least eight hours the night before.
- EAT RIGHT! If a healthy breakfast (high protein) is possible on test morning, students will benefit from the boost to mental energy and concentration. (On the flip side, sugary energy drinks or candy will tend to crash energy levels and concentration during the test.)
- PRACTICE CALM BREATHING! Calm minds think more clearly (and powerfully) than stressed-out brains. If a student tends to “freeze up” during high-stakes tests (maybe getting fixated on answers or feeling panic about poor scores), it’s possible to reset the brain to a calmer setting. The student can use slow and measured breathing, taking slow in/out breaths for 30 seconds or so. This technique helps clear and refocus the anxious test-taker’s mind.
